Marin IJ Editorial: Dominican’s Initiative to Improve Younger Voter Turnout

download-1Despite Donald Trump’s repeated claims that the presidential election is “rigged,” students at Dominican University are trying to get more young people registered and interested in voting.

Trump’s discouraging message isn’t helping this round of democracy in action.

But that hasn’t dampened the energy the San Rafael campus’ students have devoted to this election, engaging young voters on the issues and encouraging them to get involved — and, of course, vote.

Dominican is one of the university campuses selected by the Commission of Presidential Debates as a Voter Education Partner, a hub to connect with young voters, regardless of their partisan or nonpartisan leanings.

The campus has sponsored numerous forums on issues, hosted noteworthy speakers and opened its doors for younger voters to watch the presidential debates. The initiative has been both in-person and on social media.
